Introduction

Tooljet is one of the free and open-source tools platforms for deploying custom internal tools. A user can connect to various databases and perform various operations such as search, list, deletion, addition, insertions and many others depending on which database it is connected to. In this article, we will work on How to connect ToolJet with MinIO and perform various operations on them. But before engaging on this let’s first look at Tooljet and MinIO in a general way.

What is Tooljet?

ToolJet is an open-source low-code framework to build and deploy custom internal tools. It enables you to connect it to data sources such as databases, API endpoints and external services. Tooljet supports the following data sources:

Once these data sources are connected, Tooljet can run queries to fetch updated data. The data fetched can be visualized or modified using the various widgets provided by the tool. What is MinIO?

MinIO is an open source tool written in Go offering multi-cloud storage. MinIO offers high-performance, S3-compatible object storage platform. It is the only object storage suite available on every public cloud as well as Kubernetes distribution. MinIO is software-defined and is 100% open source under GNU AGPL v3. Leading Data Enterprises such as talend, banregio, feedonomics, iodine, Solvinity, POUPEX uses MinIO.

\n MinIo is S3 API Compatible, highly available and supports multiple pluggable storage backends. MinIo can equally use Tooljet in order to perform specific operations. In the next part of this article, we will guide you on How to connect ToolJet with MinIO and perform various operations on them.

How to Use ToolJet with MinIO?

Before using Tooljet and MinIO you need to set up the two tools on your device. Here will be using a Windows 10 OS with 12 RAM, 128 SSD and 500 HDD. Now let’s set up MinIO.

Setting up MinIO

Head to the https://dl.min.io/server/minio/release/windows-amd64/minio.exe and download and install the MinIO executable. You can skip this section if you already have MinIO.

Then open PowerShell and navigate to the minio file you just downloaded then run the .\minio.exe

Next use the minio.exe server D:\ to run a standalone MinIO Server. You can replace D:\ with the path you wish to store your data.

Now go to http://127.0.0.1:9000 and provide your root credentials to log in (RootUser: minioadmin, RootPass: minioadmin)

Now you can create a bucket or connect to an S3-compatible tool. we will create a bucket called mybucket and upload three objects

We have successfully uploaded 3 files to our bucket

Now let’s create our access and secret key. Make sure to save it somewhere as we will use it, later on, to connect to our Tooljet application

In your MinIO console Click on Identity> Service Account then click on Create Service account

In the windows that open click on create. A dialogue box will appear containing the details of your keys. Make sure to copy them and save them somewhere or click on the Import button.

Setting Up Tooljet

Head to Tooljet, create an account or Login and click on Create new application

Creating our interface

We will build a simple interface. It’s quite easy to build UI with Tooljet with its drag and drop functionality.

Our application will perform 2 operations

List buckets
List Objects in Buckets.

MinIO equally supports the following operation in addition to the one listed above.

Read Objects
Put Objects
Pre signed url for the download
Pre signed URL for uploads

We have created our UI, the next step consists of connecting MinIO to Tooljet.

Connecting to MinIO

You need the following information in order to connect MinIO to your application:

Host
Port
Access Key
Secret Key

In your Tooljet application navigate to the side menu and click on Source -> Add Data Source -> and select Minio

Add your hostname, port, secret and access key and test your connection to make sure the application is successfully connected to MinIO.

Creating Queries

We have successfully linked our MinIO to Tooljet we can proceed in the next phase which consists of performing various operations

List buckets

Head to the query editor(at the bottom of your screen) and click on the plus button to add a new query
Select MinIO as data source
From the operation dropdown choose List buckets
Rename your query with whatever name you want (here it’s listBucket)
In the advanced tab, select Run this query on page load? and click on create

Connect to the dropdown widget

Now we need to link the created query to our dropdown widget in order to update the values. In your dropdown settings option value and option label, enter {{queries.listBucket.data.Buckets.map(bucket => bucket['Name'])}} in order to fetch the list of buckets and the map function is to create an array of Name. listBucketis the name of the query we just created. \n

Notice that you see the list of buckets you have in your MinIO console.

Now let’s proceed to our second query which consists of listing the objects of a selected bucket. But this time we want you to DIY however just follow up on what we did previously mindfully.

Create a new query from the query editor called listObjects
From the operations dropdown select List objects in a bucket
In the bucket fields, {{components.Buckets.value}}. Note that Buckets is the name of our dropdown component and value is the name of the selected bucket.
Then click on create to create another query
Next, connect the query to the table component. Click on the table setting icon to open the inspect panel.
In the table data section enter {{queries.listObjects.data['Contents']}} where listObjects is the name of the query you created
Now you need to fetch the data of a particular bucket. To create a button next to the dropdown and name it List objects or any other name.
Add {{queries.listObjects.isLoading}} in the Loading State property of the button
In the event section, click on Add a handler -> On click. In the Action dropdown select Run query and in the Query dropdown select listObjects. Run your query and examine the results.
